Army Burn Hall College Abbottabad

Army Burn Hall College Abbottabad....

The Army Burn Hall College (ABHC) is situated in Mandian region of Abbottabad city. It is divided into two separate colleges for boys and for girls. The girls branch is located on the Mall Road near the city center, and the boys' branch is in near Mandian. Originally these were Junior Burn Hall and Senior Burn Hall Schools respectively. The junior school starts from Prep class goes up to the Masters level for girls, and the boys go to the senior school after finishing their sixth grade.

History...

Burn Hall traces its history back to 1943 when a team of missionaries from Mill Hill, London, established the Burn Hall School in Srinagar. It was named after an English Manor House, which had a hall with a stream (burn) running through it hence the name 'Burn Hall'. The school was administered by the Fathers in English public school tradition.

Some time in 1948, after Pakistan and India gained their Independence from the British Empire in 1947, a few Fathers moved to Abbottabad with a handful of students, and the help of Brigadier Aslam Khan (a brother of Air Marshal retd. Asghar Khan who also went under the name of Brigadier Pasha) and set up the school in a small hotel building, the Abbot Hotel. The school was among the best in the country and soon more buildings were added to accommodate the increasing number of students. The school was under the control of the Dicosesan Board of Education, Rawalpindi.

In 1956, a new school was constructed a few miles outside the town, on the GT (Grand Trunk) road, to provide more room for the seniors and became known as senior Burn Hall. The new school was designed to allow for adequate sports facilities and included playgrounds for all games, including swimming pool.

The college is located at 4300 feet above sea level in natural surroundings. It excelled in academic and literary activities[citation needed] and encouraged competition in sports by having House games between St Michaels and (St Andrews) later to be named St Gabriel's. The high standard achieved were in keeping with the school motto 'Quo non Ascendum' Latin for 'To what heights Can I not rise'.

(The above has been taken from the Burn Hall Alumni Association).

The only missionary left in Burn Hall School, Srinagar moved Burn Hall School to another location, Gupkar Road in Srinagar, Kashmir in 1956. The first principal of the school was Father Boerkamp.

Additional comments....

The Fathers who came to set up the School in Abbottabad realised that if Pakistan as a nation was to do well then it needed men of high calibre, intelligent, strong willed, determined, nationalistic and with the highest level of integrity. The British Empire was built on men who came from the English Public schools and therefore the Fathers replicated that system. They were successful because Boys from Burn Hall achieved distinction in the civil service, Armed Forces and Business and other fields. Old Burn Hall boys who revisited Burn Hall School, always got special reception and were honoured by the Fathers by being invited to lunch and sitting with the Fathers at the Dining Table on the dias and the Fathers took great pride and revelled in stories and achievement's made of other old boys.

The Fathers promoted sports as a means of making a boys character believing that characters are made on the sports grounds. St Michaels was represented by a black shield with gold border, crossed white lance and sword. St Gabriels, were represented by a Lion Holding a fiery torch.

There were 7 games exercised; Cricket, Hockey, Football, Basketball, Tennis, Swimming, and athletics.

In 1966/67 There were foreign experts who had come to assist in building the Tarbella Dam and generally their families stayed in Abbotabad. The daughters of one of the consultantsi.e 2 sisters joined Burn Hall and were the first foreign girls to enroll in Senior Burn Hall. Miss Samina Manzoor(now Mrs Brig. Iqbal Hanif) daughter of Mrs Manzoor and Miss Imrana Hameed daughter of Mrs Hameed, senior teacher in Burn Hall (now Mrs Bashir Wali former Director General Intelligence Bureau Pakistan & Pakistani High Commissioner to Sri Lanka) became the first Pakistani girls to join Senior Burn HAll School. Foreign students came from Morocco, Egypt, Laos, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Kenya, US and Britain

Abbottabad Public School

Abbottabad Public School...

Abbottabad Public School, also commonly known as APS and Railway Public School, is a public, all boys, boarding school for, 7th to 12th grade students, located in Abbottabad, Pakistan.[1] APS is one of the best secondary and higher education schools in the region, both in academics as well as in extra curricular activities. APS follows the philosophy of the British boarding schools where academic rigour is balanced with a disciplined boarding life with activities ranging from intramural sports to debating and cultural events...

Abbottabad Public School

Motto "Character is Destiny"
Established 1961
Type Public
Location Abbottabad, North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan
Nickname APS

History
In 1957, Pakistan Railways opened up a school outside Abbottabad on land donated by Sardar Bahadur Khan, brother of Field Marshal Ayub Khan who became the President of Pakistan. At that point, the school was called Railway Public School but just after two years it was closed and then after a gap of one year, in April 1961, the school was renamed as Abbottabad Public School which emerged as one of the prime, and elite, educational institutions of Pakistan.

Name..

In 1986, Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, the then President, re-named this institution as Abbottabad Public School & College. Later on, the school Board of Governors, in its meeting on July 20, 2002, decided to delete the words “and College” and give the institution its original name Abbottabad Public School. It is still more popularly known as APS and its alumni as Abbottonians .

The founding, and the longest serving, Principal of APS was Mr. M.A. Rahman. During his tenure the school developed into an Institution and produced a number of student batches that had a balanced blend of education, sports, personal grooming and social behavior. His team at the faculty was composed of noted educationists of the era including Mr. Hugh Cathpole, the former Principal of Cadet College; Dehradoon, Cadet College; Hasanabdal and PAF College; Sargodha. Other eminent members of the faculty included Mr. Majid Siddiqui, Syed Sultan Zulqarnain, Mr. Athar Ansari, Mr. S.M. Amin and Mr. Basharat Ahmed.

Location..

The main campus is about 10 km outside Abbottabad on the road (Mansehra Road) that eventually becomes Karakoram Highway. It covers an area of about 55 acres (220,000 m2). The school is surrounded by deep natural crevices in almost a U-shape. The only non-crevice side faces a high mountain. Karakoram Highway passes between school and the mountain. Arguably, it is the best located educational institution in Pakistan with mild and pleasant weather, healthy surroundings, large playing fields and ample boarding facilities.

Academics...
Abbottabad Public School is a renowned academic institution in the area. It has attracted many students from all over Pakistan as well as other countries. Historically, APS students have performed excellently in both the tenth grade and twelfth grade Board examinations.

Boarding houses,,,,
APS has seven main boarding houses in which all boarders reside. Usually, up to a hundred students can live in each of these houses, in different room capacity dormitories. Each of these houses has a House Master, a House Tutor and several student Prefects. The houses are:

Iqbal House
Jinnah House
Liaquat House
Sir Syed House
Nishtar House
Rehman House
Sardar Bahadur House
Sultan Tipu House
The day-scholar house is Rehman House, named after Mr M. A. Rehman, the first principal of APS.

Student life
Student life at APS is known to be a memorable experience and friendships lasts for the rest of the alumni's life. The emphasis on sports is as important as education itself while extra-curricular activities offer students the chance to enhance personal growth. The location of APS, outside the city of Abbottabad, itself is probably as alluring for the students due to its sprawling stretches of green between the hills and the ravines, both of which offer ample opportunities for the adventure seeking souls.

Among the more famous batch of APS is the class of 1968-75 which has remained deeply networked till today. The more active members of this batch are Khalid Waseem Khokhar [KWK], Shahid Ali Durrani, Khaled Saeed Malik [KSM], Khushnood Ali Baz [KAB], Javaid Akhtar Alvi [JAA], Syed Aun Zaidi, Rashid Ijaz, Riaz Asif Janjua, Akhlaq Hussain, Naveed Tajjamal Malik, Sajid Ali Khan, Sajid Mumtaz, Mirza Aleem Agha and Jalal Umer

The other batch that is still well connected is the class of 1977-83. Among the students were Saifullah Khan Afridi, Shahid Ghaffar, Kamran Aquil, Sajid Nawaz Khan, Alamgir Khan, Taimur Saeed, Saeed Akhtar, Mehmood Usmani, Junaid Bilal Kazi, Tariq Jamil, Shoaib Alam Shamsi, Atiq ur Rahman, Sajjad Baig, Hadi Subhani and Kazim Raza

General facilities....
A beautiful mosque , one main dining halls and a cafeteria, grocery store, general store, book store, barber shop, cobbler, washerman pit, and fruit shop are also part of the boarding facilities.

Common-rooms....
All the Houses have their own recreation rooms, called “common-rooms”, where residents play indoor games during their free time and on holidays even. Every common room is facilitated with Television, DVD, Table Tennis, Carom, Chess, draughts and scrabble.

Athletics...
There is one football field, two hockey fields, one cricket field (combination of two hockey fields), four basket ball courts, one tennis court, one volley ball court and an outdoor swimming pool.

School code of honour....
I pledge my word of honour that, I shall do my duty to God, to my country, and to my fellow human beings and shall obey all the rules and regulations of this Institution. I shall honour my parents, teachers and elders and be good to those who are younger than me. I shall do the best that I can to help all the people who are old, poor, crippled or in distress. Everyday I shall do at least one good deed that will please a fellow human being without the distinction of country, class, colour or creed. Karakoram Highway

Karakoram Highway..

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) (Urdu: شاہراہ قراقرم, Chinese: 中巴公路) is the highest paved international road in the world. It connects China and Pakistan across the Karakoram mountain range, through the Khunjerab Pass, at an altitude of 4,693 m/15,397 ft as confirmed by both SRTM and multiple GPS readings. It connects China's Xinjiang region with Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan and also serves as a popular tourist attraction. It is now part of the route officially known as as N-35 within Pakistan. Due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions in which it was constructed, it is also referred to as the "Ninth Wonder of the World..

History..

The Karakoram Highway, also known as the Friendship Highway in China, was built by the governments of Pakistan and China, and was completed in 1986, after 20 years of construction. 810 Pakistani and 82 Chinese workers lost their lives,[1] mostly in landslides and falls, while building the highway. The route of the KKH traces one of the many paths of the ancient Silk Road.

On the Pakistani side, the road was constructed by FWO (Frontier Works Organization), employing the Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers. Presently, the Engineer-in-Chief branch of the Pakistani Army is working on a project documenting the history of the highway. It is being written by Brigadier (Retired) Muhammad Mumtaz Khalid, who oversaw its construction.

The Highway...

The highway, connecting Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan to the ancient Silk Road, runs approximately 1,300 km from Kashgar, a city in the Xinjiang region of China, to Abbottabad, of Pakistan. An extension of the highway south west from Abbottabad, in the form of N-35, meets the Grand Trunk Road, N-5 at Hassanabdal, Pakistan.

The highway cuts through the collision zone between the Eurasian and Indian plates, where China, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan come within 250 km of each other. Owing largely to the extremely sensitive state of the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan, the Karakoram highway has strategic and military importance.

On June 30, 2006, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Pakistani Highway Administration and China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) to rebuild and upgrade the Karakoram Highway. According to SASAC, the width of the highway will be expanded from 10 metres to 30 metres, and its transport capacity will be increased three times. As well, the upgraded road will be constructed to particularly accommodate heavy-laden vehicles and extreme weather conditions.

China and Pakistan are also planning to link the Karakoram Highway to the southern port of Gwadar in Balochistan through the Chinese-aided Gwadar-Dalbandin railway, which extends up to Rawalpindi.

Pakistani Section...

The Pakistani section of the highway is 806 km long. It starts from Abbottabad (though N-35 of which KKH is now a part, officially starts from Hassanabdal). The highway meets the Indus River at Thakot, and continues along the river until Bunji, where the Gilgit River joins the Indus River. This is the place where three great mountain ranges meet, the Hindukush, the Himalaya and the Karakoram. The western end of the Himalayas, marked by the 9th highest peak in the world, Nanga Parbat can be seen from the highway. The highway passes through the capital of the Gilgit-Baltistan, Gilgit, and continues to the beautiful valleys of Nagar and Hunza, along the Hunza River. Many of the highest mountains, lakes and glaciers in the Karakoram can be directly seen from the highway in this section. Finally, the highway meets the Pakistan-China border at Khunjerab Pass..

Chinese Section...

The Karakoram Highway in the Xinjiang region of China. The Chinese Section of the Karakoram Highway follows the north-south Sarykol ('Yellow Lake') valley just west of the Tarim Basin, which is barely visible in the satellite image at left. The road from Kashgar goes southwest about 80 km and then turns west to enter the Gez (Ghez) River canyon between Chakragil mountain on the north and Kongur mountain on the south. From the Gez canyon the population becomes Kirgiz. Having climbed up to the valley, the road turns south past Kongur, Karakul Lake and Muztagh Ata on the east. Below Muztagh Ata a new road goes west over the Kulma Pass to join the Pamir Highway in Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan. The main road continues over a low pass (where the population becomes Tajik) and descends to Tashkurgan. Further south a valley and jeep track leads west towards the Wakhjir Pass to the Wakhan Corridor. Next the road turns west to a checkpost and small settlement at Pirali, and then the Khunjerab Pass, beyond which is Pakistan, the Khunjerab River and Hunza.

(In 747 Gao Xianzhi, a Tang general crossed the Broghol Pass into what is now Pakistan - the furthest Chinese penetration in this direction. He was later defeated at the Battle of Talas, and the Chinese withdrew from the region.)

Tourism....

In recent years, the highway has become a destination for adventure tourism. It was ranked as the 3rd best Tourist Destination in Pakistan by The Guardian.[2] The road has given mountaineers and cyclists easier access to the many high mountains, glaciers and lakes in the area. The highway provides access to Gilgit and Skardu from Islamabad by road. These are the two major hubs for mountaineering expeditions in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir.[3]

The Gilgit-Baltistan Administration of Pakistan and the Xinjiang Administration of China have signed an agreement to issue border passes to their permanent residents. This pass is valid for a calendar year and is used to travel through Khunjerab Pass only.

Mountains and glaciers

The region includes some of the world's largest glaciers like the Baltoro Glacier. Five of the Eight-thousanders (mountains taller than 8,000m) of the world that are in Pakistan are accessible by the highway. The notable mountains that can be directly seen while traveling on the highway are:

Rock art and petroglyphs....

Ancient petroglyphs near ChilasMain article: Northern Areas, Pakistan#Rock art and petroglyphs
There are more than 20,000 pieces of rock art and petroglyphs all along the highway that are concentrated at ten major sites between Hunza and Shatial. The carvings were left by various invaders, traders and pilgrims who passed along the trade route, as well as by locals. The earliest date back to between 5000 BC and 1000 BC, showing single animals, triangular men and hunting scenes in which the animals are larger than the hunters. These carvings were pecked into the rock with stone tools and are covered with a thick patina that yields their age.

Traveling...

There are several transport companies in Pakistan that offer bus service between major towns of the highway, and from Rawalpindi and Lahore. The largest company is Northern Areas Transport Corporation (NATCO). Other companies are Masherbrum Travel and Silk Route Travel.

Bus service between Gilgit and Kashghar...
On June 1, 2006, a daily bus service began between Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistani Kashmir and Kashghar, Xinjiang, through the Sust and Tashkorgan border area.[4]

Weather...

Landslides often disturb the traffic for several hours. The KKH is best traveled in the spring or early autumn. Heavy snow during harsh winters can shut the highway down for extended periods. Heavy monsoon rains, around July and August, cause occasional landslides that can block the road for hours or more. The border crossing between China and Pakistan at Khunjerab Pass is open only between May 1 and December 31 of every year.
