AYUB MEDICAL COLLEGE ABBOTTABAD








Introduction: Ayub Medical College Abbottabad

The Ayub Medical College is located in Abbottabad, situated at an altitude of 1,225 m. (4002 ft.) and surrounded by refreshing green hills of Sarban, one of the best-known hill resorts of Pakistan. It is situated on the Karakorum Highway, the Silk Route to China, 120 Km from Rawalpindi/Islamabad. The climate is temperate with 4 distinct seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter. The summer is pleasant while the winter is cool with occasional snowfall. The city is non-industrial, situated in the lush green Orash Valley and is fairly free from environmental pollution. It has a population of over 300,000.

In 1978, the Government sanctioned establishment of Ayub Medical College, named after Late Field Marshal Ayub Khan. The 1st academic year started on 15th May, 1979 with enrolment of 100 students. It is situated at a scenic location on Karakorum Highway. The College building is the most beautiful of all medical colleges of Pakistan. Since 1979 to date the College has undergone tremendous development. At present the Medical College comprises of modern buildings, 1,000 bedded ‘Ayub Teaching Hospital’, a School of Nursing, a Paramedical School, play grounds and other supporting amenities for the students and staff. The college has spacious lecture halls with most sophisticated audiovisual teaching aids, well-equipped laboratories, museums and a vast, centrally air-conditioned library having Text Books, Reference Books, CD’s and Taps, Medical Journals, a ‘Self-Learning Resource Centre’ and a Computer Library with access to Internet.

Thousands of doctors have graduated from Ayub Medical College so far who are holding high positions not only in the country but abroad as well, including UK, Ireland, Canada and USA. It is claimed that about 70% of Pakistani doctors in Ireland are Ayubians!


With commissioning of INOR (Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Oncology and Radiotherapy) at the campus, Ayub Medical College has joined nuclear medicine club where most modern techniques for diagnostic and radiation therapy.

The College has been publishing its Journal, ‘Journal of Ayub Medical College (JAMC)’ since January 1988. It is a peer reviewed journal and has gained it place as a standard medical journal, recognized by the PMDC and registered with International Serial Data System of France, Indexed Medicus of WHO (EMRO). JAMC is the only medical journal from Pakistan, available full text with illustrations free online, and is one of the 3 indexed medical journals from Pakistan. Hostels for boys and girls are located at the campus, adjacent to college building. Four hostels for boys and one for girls is available besides hostels for MO’s, House Officers, Paramedics and Nurses. Full-time Resident Wardens, Deputy Provosts and Provosts, separate for Boys’ and Girls’ hostel, control the hostels. Messing and other utilities are available in the hostels.
